"Every cop turned around and started unloading like super trigger happy as if their training was coming into full effect and they were being able to utilize it," said Cleerdin. "Everybody was just blasting this car to pieces. It was absolutely terrifying."

"Cops are shooting from the front of the car, back into the rest of the on-coming traffic to the check point, into the rest of the innocent civilians down the road," said Cleerdin.

"It was way beyond reckless," said Cleerdin. "I couldn't believe it. These are professional people, professional officers, and they're training, they're highly trained and they're not supposed to do stuff like that."

The suspects' car allegedly was driven toward a police officer which caused every officer to open fire.

WXSF: Sheriff Ingram explains what happened during checkpoint shooting (June 17 2013)

Something went wrong at a Brunswick County checkpoint, leaving two people recovering from gunshot wounds and seven deputies on the sidelines until investigators get answers.
Four sheriff's deputies from Brunswick County have been moved to desk positions and three New Hanover County deputies are on leave after 34-year-old Antoine Graham and 42-year-old Jerry Melvin, both of Leland, were shot at a DWI checkpoint.

Brunswick Sheriff John Ingram said Monday during a news conference that everything was done by procedure. When the shooting happened, the checkpoint had just started and deputies immediately shut it down to deal with the situation at hand.

According to Ingram, deputies saw Graham and Melvin throwing things from the vehicle before they got to the checkpoint. Deputies were able to recover a gun and a bag of weed.

The sheriff said it is unclear at this point if the two items belongs to either of the suspects.

WSAV: Brunswick sheriff: checkpoint escape led to fired shots (June 17 2013)

A weekend incident at a traffic checkpoint that left two motorists wounded by gunfire and led to seven deputies being placed on paid leave became violent when an SUV driver drove toward deputies to escape, Brunswick County's sheriff said Monday.

Four sheriff's deputies from Brunswick County and three from New Hanover County fired their handguns during the incident, Sheriff John Ingram said. The driver and his passenger were each struck multiple times.

"Realizing their lives were in danger of being run over by this vehicle," Ingram said, deputies "proceeded to shoot at the vehicle in attempts to stop the vehicle from traveling any further."

A smart cop would just get the hell out of the way. He can be arrested later.
